Debby Ryan is one of the most watched, young stars in the business today, having become known for her unmatched comedic timing, flexibility to also give powerful dramatic performances, and illuminate the television and movie screens with her casual confidence and genuine performances.
Best known for her starring role as “Bailey Pickett” on the hit Disney Channel series “The Suite Life on Deck,” at only 18 years old Ryan has emerged in 2011 as not only a stellar actress and a teen idol, but a budding businesswoman and true creative force in the business. Currently, Debby can be seen starring in the new Disney Channel series “Jessie”, where she stars as Jessie – a Texas teenager who moves to New York City to become a nanny for the wealthy Ross familyʼs four children.
Born May 13, 1993 in Alabama, Ryan lived in Texas for five years before moving to Wiesbaden, Germany with her family, where she lived for three years. While living in Germany, Ryan was one of the only kids participating in musicals and plays. She knew that she wanted to be an actor at the ripe young age of nine, sharing “I was sitting in the wings backstage and it hit me, I realized that every amount of work and sacrifice was worth that moment, sitting by a velvet curtain, waiting for my scene. I loved the grind of waking up early, practicing my lines, school, going right to the theater, rehearsing, and then heading home to bed to do it all again the next day. That was better to me than any amount of sitting at home that kids my age were doing.”
After three years in Germany, the Ryan family moved back to Keller, Texas before Debby hit her teens, where they lived until she made the move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry Ryan got her start in film and various television commercials, landing roles in BARNEY: LETʼS GO TO THE FIREHOUSE, two national commercials, and then the MGM feature film THE LONGSHOTS, alongside Keke Palmer and Ice Cube. From there her career took off, securing one of the starring roles on the Disney Channel series “The Suite Life on Deck,” which premiered in 2008. In 2010, Ryan starred in the smash hit, Movie of the Week [which aired on Disney] 16 WISHES. The film premiered at 5.6 million viewers, was second on the list of Cableʼs Top 25 most popular shows of the week, and made that list twice. 16 WISHES went on to premiere in over 30 countries worldwide. In addition to starring in the film, she also sang the theme song “A Wish Comes True Everyday,” pitched and starred in a music video for the song, and wrote an original song entitled “Open Eyes,” producing it with her singer-songwriter brother Chase. Ryan shares, “16 Wishes was one of my most exciting projects to date, as I got to be very involved in some of the creative aspects of the film – I suggested singing the title song for the movie, created and pitched a video concept, got HD behind the scenes footage, and more. I would love to produce someday, and the whole experience not only allowed me to take the reigns as a lead actor, but also taught me a lot about production and all the stages of a project.”
In 2010 Ryan also appeared in the independent film WHAT IF… opposite Kevin Sorbo, John Ratzenberger, and Kristy Swanson, which premiered in select theaters across the country, and is still showing in various theaters today. Most recently, Debby appeared and performed in the nationally broadcast, Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade which aired on ABC.
